ABOUT THE ROUTE

THE ROUTE

Check out THE MAP for the exact route.

We have traveled to many places but our ultimate dream has always been an expedition over several months. With a preliminary route in mind, we explored the USA on a day-by-day basis. We were lucky to receive insider information from locals about more secluded areas of their states and we deviated from our route based on their suggestions. Though there are certain must-sees that we did not miss, we wanted to concentrate on areas off the beaten path.

For higher independence, we prefer to camp, i.e. sleep in our car (for more details, see ABOUT THE RIG). It has proven to provide immense ease of mind when traveling through unknown country if you are not forced to pitch a tent or find reasonable accommodation before sunset. Also, some of the more rugged areas do not provide any amenities while others have no vacancies. When permitted, BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING is definitely our first choice. Have you ever enjoyed a night under the desert sky or in the clear air of the mountains without disturbing lights, humming generators, or smell of old frying oil? These are the moments when you appreciate nature at its best.

Along the road less traveled, we conquered several 4x4 trails to satisfy our off-road desires. The less accessible the road is to us, the more interesting the challenge is to our expedition - and the more pristine the surroundings.

You have probably guessed it by now: we like to enjoy nature. However, we are immensely curious to explore fascinating cities. Having lived in Los Angeles for years, we have gotten to know life in a modern metropolis. It was an intriguing contrast to discover the much older towns and cities along the East Coast and other parts of the country.

You could summarize this expedition with the following words:
We wanted to find out what the United States of America was all about.
Is it possible in such a short time? No way.
Is it worth the effort? Absolutely.
