BODCAU WILDLIFE REFUGE, Louisiana

Bodcau Wildlife Refuge is an area in northern Louisiana recommended to us by a ranger.

Unfortunately, we have to find out that most roads are not permitted for wheeled vehicles. When we finally find a trail we venture along for about 500 yards through thick mud and discover that it is a dead end. We are concerned about getting stuck and it is not long until the rear end of the truck sits completely submerged in the watery dirt. There is no way forward or backward. Trying to get the rig out of this mud hole I break a hand winch; the High Lift Jack does not do the job either. When jacking up the car, it tends to tip to the right or left and we cannot get any logs under the tires. After about 2 hours we call the ranger station which recommended the area and they call 911. The fire department arrives about 45 minutes later with two ATVs. At first, I think this is a joke (how can two ATVs help us?) but later the four of us are able to get some logs under the truck. With the help of the two ATVs pulling our Jeep, we finally get free at 9pm.

That is quite an adventure for a trail 500 yards long...
