Air Lift Load Controller Install: See install gallery for install pics |
This system was sponsored as an experiment!
All systems by Air Lift are designed for stock vehicles and the very knowledgeable
technician from Air Lift was not sure how the air bags would react to extreme
articulation of the rear axle. Well, we took the challenge and I was supplied
with the Cherokee stock bracketry and some longer air bags.
This install involves some time. The instructions are very clear and easy to
follow.
I started with mounting the gauges which I wanted on top of the dashboard. I
ran the preassembled airhose/wire harness through the firewall and from there
to the top of the dash, plugged in air hoses and electrical wires as described
in the instructions and bolted the gauges to the dash. The next challenge was
to find a location for the compressor. I had dual air compressors for air-lockers
and tire inflation but wanted to keep the air suspension separate. The location
recommended for Cherokees was not satisfying - during 4-wheeling I would rip
that thing right off the frame! So I decided to mount it next to one of my other
compressors right under the hood. I ran the second harness from the first along
the frame rail to the back axle. Then I positioned the lower mounting plates
on the leaf spring packs and attached the air bags on top to see where the upper
bracket would go. I marked the holes and drilled the required size. Then the
brackets were mounted. I connected all loose ends of the harnesses and attached
the airbags. Before tightening the buttom bolt I inflated the bags to about
10 psi.
Surprisingly enough I seemed to have done a good job, because there were no
leaks.
Note: After the first test of the system on a trail the bags are still intact and the extra travel of the rear axle was no problem. |
